Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a prototypical type of adult stem cell and can differentiate into multiple lineages, including chondrocytes, myocytes, adipocytes, and pancreatic islet cells. MSCs enable the expansion of clinically relevant numbers of stem cells, making them promising candidates for tissue repair and regenerative medicine. Isolation and in vitro expansion of MSCs have demonstrated their capacity to maintain viability and proliferative potential over prolonged culture periods. Moreover, MSCs can stably uptake and retain exogenously introduced genes—enabling their use as vehicles for targeted gene delivery.
